Preserve APK Signatures During Distribution

An APK signature is more than a build artifact. Android uses it to identify the app, authorize updates, and protect the trust relationship with users. Changing it during distribution can create problems that are difficult to reverse.

Android requires an update to be signed with a compatible key. If a downloaded APK is re-signed with a different key, users may be unable to install it over the existing app. They may need to uninstall first, which can remove local data.

Signature changes also affect:

  • enterprise and MDM distribution policies;
  • partner verification and app-store review;
  • update delivery and rollback plans;
  • user trust in the download source.

Re-signing may look like a small build step, but it changes the identity of the artifact users receive.

A distribution pipeline can break the signature when it:

  • modifies the APK and signs it again with a different key;
  • rebuilds the APK for each channel;
  • applies a post-processing step that rewrites signed content;
  • uses a shared signing key that is not the original app key.

The safest default is to distribute the exact signed artifact that was tested.

With APK Ref Injector, the base APK stays signed. The service attaches the requested channel value during the download response without changing the APK signature. The same V2/V3 signature remains valid.

That means:

  • the app can update normally;
  • enterprise signature checks keep working;
  • channel links do not require a new build;
  • the artifact you test is the artifact users install.

Record the original signature and compare it with the downloaded file:

Terminal window
apksigner verify --verbose original.apk
apksigner verify --verbose downloaded.apk

Both should report the expected V2/V3 schemes. If your distribution process changes the signature, stop and fix the process before publishing.

Signature preservation applies to signed APKs that meet the service requirements. V1-only APKs and ZIP64 packages are not supported. Validate your base APK during onboarding and test the full download flow before a campaign starts.
